Khassan ( Russian Хасан ) is an urban-type settlement in the Primorye region of the Far East of Russia with 742 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
Chassan is located in the Rajon Chassan, which includes the southwesternmost tip of the Primorye region. The Chassan Sea extends northwest of the settlement, and the border river Tumen ( Russian : Tumannaja, Kor .: Tumangang) flows to the south . In the middle of it, right next to Chassan, is the triangle between Russia , North Korea and the People's Republic of China .
Chassan is the southernmost town in the Russian Far East and the only one on the shared border with North Korea, which is only 17 kilometers long.
history
The Khassan station, which is the border station of the Baranovsky – Khassan - Razon railway line , was built in 1951. In 1959, the Chassan settlement was established as the residence of the construction workers employed on the railway line. The station and settlement of Chassan got their name from the nearby Lake Chassan, which became famous in Russia in 1938 through the border fighting between troops of the Soviet Union and Japan (and Manchukuos ), known as the Battle of Lake Chassan . In 1983, Chassan was given urban-type settlement status. The railway line to North Korea has lost importance since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The number of trains that pass through Chassan is now very small. In 2005 only about 10,000 travelers were counted, freight traffic is also falling sharply. However, the Russian Railway plans to renew the v. a. on the Korean side ailing line as part of a Trans- Korean railroad .
