Georg Friedrich Meyer (born February 11, 1645 in Basel , † December 25, 1693 there ) was a Swiss geodesist , mathematician and cartographer of the second half of the 17th century.

Meyer attended high school in Basel and was trained by his father in mathematics, surveying and fortress construction. He worked and studied in Alsace and Lorraine until 1673 . Back in Basel he worked as a math teacher and cartographer. From 1687 to 1691 Meyer was a member of the Small Council . In 1689 Meyer became a Weinherr, in 1690 a captain in the Steinenquartier and in 1691 a wage lord, d. H. Head of Basel Construction.

Meyer's pen includes numerous plans and maps of the Basel area , but also some of the neighboring Alsace. These include above all Landvogtei maps (office maps), border plans over the canton, as well as road and land register maps. Emanuel Büchel later made very exact copies of some of Meyer's plans .

Georg Friedrich Meyer also wrote two papers:

  • Doctrina triangulorum sive trigonometria : the teaching / of measurement of the triangles corresponds to the use of the Tabularum Sinuum, Tangentium & Secantium [...] (first published individually in 1678 by the "Schriftgiesserei" HR and L. König and JR Genath in Basel)
  • Stereometria sive demensio solidorum: this is external measurement of physical things / or visor art (first published individually in 1675 by Genath in Basel, again in 1691).

  2. The two writings also appeared together in 1678, supplemented by the Compendium geometriae practicae by the Basel-based "Lohnherrn" (geometer employed by the city) Jakob Meyer at Genath in Basel. This printing company was founded in 1617 by Johann Jakob Genath (1582–1654) from Delémont , was continued by his descendants and became known as "Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei" under its later owner Johann Wilhelm Haas (1698–1764).
