The village is located in the Far East of Russia on the southeastern edge of the Chanka Lowlands , about 140 kilometers (as the crow flies) north of the regional capital, Vladivostok . history

In the autumn of 1885, 25 families from the Chernigov governorate (now Ukraine ) came to the area of the present-day village. After spending the first few winters in earthen huts, they founded the village on October 1, 1886, together with other resettlers who had arrived from the Poltava and Kharkov Governments , which they named in memory of their old homeland.

A little later, the Ussuri Railway from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok, now part of the Trans-Siberian Railway , ran through the town and started operating in 1897.

On January 4, 1926, Chernigovka became the administrative center of a Rajon and has remained so until today, with an interruption from 1963 to 1965, when the area was annexed to the Spassk Rajon .
