Kharkov Governorate
The Kharkov governorate ( Russian Харьковская губерния Char'kovskaja gubernija , Ukrainian Харківська губернія Charkiwska hubernija ) was a governorate of the Ukrainian ( Soviet Union ) of the Russian Empire from the end of 1922 to the Soviet Republic. The capital of the governorate was the city of Kharkov (Ukrainian Kharkiv ).
geography
The governorate was in Sloboda-Ukraine in the northeast of today's Ukraine. It bordered the Poltava governorate to the west, the Chernigov governorate to the north-west, the Kursk governorate to the north, the Voronezh governorate to the north-east, the Don Army Oblast to the east and the Yekaterinoslav governorate to the south . The governorate roughly comprised the area of today 's Kharkiv Oblast , the north of Luhansk Oblast and Donetsk Oblast and the south of Sumy Oblast .
Around 1900 it was divided into the following Ujesdy :
- Ujesd Akhtyrka (ukr. Ochtyrka )
- Ujesd Bogoduchow (Ukrainian Bohoduchiw )
- Uesd Kharkov
- Ujesd Isjum
- Ujesd Kupyansk
- Ujesd Lebedin (Ukrainian Lebedyn )
- Ujesd Smijew ( Ukrainian Smijiw )
- Ujesd Starobjelsk ( Ukrainian Starobilsk )
- Ujesd Sumy
- Ujesd Walki (Ukrainian Walky )
- Ujesd Wolchansk (Ukrainian Vovchansk )
In 1923 a new administrative structure was introduced in the Ukrainian SSR and the Kharkov Governorate was divided into 5 Okrugs ( ukr . : Okruh):
- Kharkov
- Bogoduchov
- Isjum
- Kupyansk
- Sumy
The Kharkov governorate was dissolved in 1925 and the okrugs became the second level of administration after the republic.
population
The first Russian census in 1897 revealed 2,492,316 inhabitants for the governorate of Kharkov on an area of 54,495 km² (46 inhabitants / km²). Of these, 2,009,411 were Minor Russians (Ukrainians), 440,936 Russians, 12,650 Jews, 10,258 Belarusians and smaller groups of Poles, Germans and Tatars.
