The Poltava governorate ( Russian Полтавская губерния / Poltawskaja gubernija, ukr. Полтавська губернія / Poltawska gubernija) was a governorate (Gubernija / губерния) of the Russian Empire . It was in the center of what is now Ukraine . In the southwest, the Dnieper formed the border with the Kiev governorate . In the northeast it bordered the Kharkov Governorate and in the south on the Yekaterinoslav and Kherson Governments . It was created in 1802 from the southern half of the Little Russian Governorate. From the northern half of this division became the Chernigov Governorate .

The name of the Little Russian Government goes back to the time when the Polish-Russian border ran near the Dnepr, so large parts of Ukraine did not belong to Russia.

The Poltava Governorate had an area of ​​49,365 km².

With the establishment of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic , the Poltava Governorate also became part of it. After several changes in the administrative structure, the governorates were dissolved in 1925 and the Poltava governorate was replaced by the seven okrugs :

The governorate had 2,778,151 inhabitants in 1897. Of these, 2,583,133 were Ukrainians, 110,352 Jews, 72,941 Russians and there were also smaller groups of Germans, Poles and Belarusians.
