history
Today's Krasnohrad was founded between 1731 and 1733 as a fortress called Bilevsk (Ukrainian Білевськ ) on the defensive line of the Russian southern border between the Dnieper and the Donets .
After the Russo-Turkish War from 1768 to 1774 , the fortress, of which there are still remains today, lost its strategic importance. The place, which has meanwhile grown around the fortress, was renamed Konstantinograd (Ukrainian Kostjantynohrad ) by decree of Tsarina Catherine the Great after her grandson Konstantin . At that time the settlement already had 130 houses with 617 residents.
In 1797 the town received the status of a town which was then provincial capital in the Russian governorate of Poltava from 1802 . In 1810 1,680 people lived here. Following the Russian Civil War , the city was given its current name in 1922 (in German "Red City") after the red symbol of the communists who were victorious in the civil war .
During the Second World War , the city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops from September 20, 1941 to September 18, 1943 .
