Isjum ( Ukrainian Ізюм ; Russian Изюм ) is an independent city in the eastern Ukrainian Oblast of Kharkiv with 48,000 inhabitants (2018).
geography
The city is located in the historical region of Sloboda-Ukraine on the bank of the Siverskyi Donets . It is the center of the Rajon of the same name, 125 km southeast of Kharkiv on the M 03 trunk road , a section of the European route 40 .
history
The city was first mentioned in 1571 . The name Isjum comes from the name of the Isjumez river and an important ford (Isjumfurt) in the Middle Ages, which was located on the strategically important connection between Moscow and the Crimea . In the 17th and 18th centuries the city was a location of the Cossack regiment (fortified "Isjum Line" against the Crimean Tatars) and in the 19th century the city of Isjum was the administrative center of the Ujesd of the same name in the Kharkov governorate .
The city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops from June 23, 1942 to February 5, 1943 and the scene of heavy fighting on the Eastern Front.
Economy and Transport
From an economic point of view, mechanical engineering, the optical industry and furniture production are particularly important in industry. The city is also an important traffic junction, the Kharkiv – Horlivka railway has a train station in town.
