Serhiy Iwanowytsch Wassylkiwskyj ( Ukrainian Сергій Іванович Васильківський , Russian Сергей Иванович Васильковский Sergei Ivanovich Wassilkowski ; born October 7, jul. / 19th October  1854 greg. In Izyum , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire , † September 24 jul. / 7 October  1917 greg. in Charkow , Russian Republic ) was a Ukrainian genre and landscape painter and art historian .

Life

Serhiy Vasylkivskyi was born in Isjum, a town in the historic Sloboda-Ukraine region in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Kharkiv . From 1876 to 1885 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg , where he was taught by Michail Clodt and Volodymyr Orlowskyj , among others . From 1886 to 1888 he deepened his skills in France and traveled to England, Spain, Italy, South Africa and Germany. 1888 settled in Kharkiv in 1888, where he was active in Ukrainian art circles and headed the architecture and art society. He died in 1917 at the age of 62 in Kharkiv and was buried there in the youth park.

Wassylkivskyj created more than 3000 realistic and impressionist paintings that stand out for their poetry; Characterize the richness of color and the integrity of the composition. His work contains some portraits (including by Taras Shevchenko ), historical paintings such as the Zaporozhian Skirmishes with Tatars (1892), Cossacks in the steppe (1915) and Cossack campaign (1917), genre pictures such as Cossacks and girls (1894) and the market in Poltava (1902); as well as many landscapes such as the Kosakenwiese (1893), Dnepr floodplains (1896) and along the Donets (1901).

Together with Mykola Samokysch , he created the album “From the Ukrainian Antiquity” (Saint Petersburg, 1900) and “Motifs of Ukrainian Ornament” (Saint Petersburg, 1912). His pictures can be found in the Tretyakov Gallery (ДТГ) in Moscow and museums in Kiev , Kharkiv, Sumy and Odessa .
