Mykola Samokysch
Mykola Semenowytsch Samokysch (born October 13 . Jul / 25. October 1860 . Greg in Nezhin , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 18 January 1944 in Simferopol , Crimea , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian - Russian and Soviet graphic artist and painter, particularly he made a name for himself as a battle and animal painter . He was the husband of the Russian painter Elena Samokisch-Sudkovskaya .

Mykola Samokysch was born in the city of Nizhyn in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernihiv . He studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts between 1879 and 1885 and completed his training in Paris from 1886 to 1889 . In 1890 he was made a member of the academy and from 1912 he headed the martial arts class at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. From 1936 to 1941 he taught at the Kharkov Art Institute. One of his students was the Taras Shevchenko Prize winner from 1969 Karpo Trochymenko ( Карпо Дем'янович Трохименко 1885-1979). From 1919 he lived in the Crimea, where he died at the age of 83 in Simferopol, which was occupied by German troops. In total, Samokysch created more than 10,000 paintings.
