Maksym Krywonis was initially a close confidante of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj . Later there was likely a conflict between the two Cossack leaders.

Krywonis took part in a leading position in the Battle of Korsun , the Battle of Starokostjantyniw and the Battle of Pyljawzi . Under his command there were massacres of the Jewish population in July 1648 in Polonne and in October 1648 in Kremenez .

He died, probably of the plague , at the beginning of the siege of Samostya in November 1648.
