The museum is located in the neoclassical-style building, one of the most important monuments in the capital. The architect was Władysław Horodecki , to whom the city also owes the house with the chimeras . The museum is located on Mychaila Hrushevskoho Street ( Михайла Грушевського ) number 6 in the city center.

history

The museum was founded on the initiative of Ukrainian intellectuals (including Wikentij Chwoika ) in the late nineteenth century as the first public museum in Kiev. Originally the museum was intended for antiques, but after World War I it became a museum of history and after World War II it became an art museum. In connection with the Euromaidan protests , the building became the focus of clashes between police and protesters in early 2014 and was downright besieged. For this reason, the museum had to temporarily cease operations.

exhibition

The museum houses more than 20,000 art objects, from icons to realism to the Russian avant-garde. It includes works by Alexander Bogomazow , Abram Manewitsch , Dawid Burljuk , Alexandra Exter , Kasimir Malewitsch , Wadim Meller , Rufin Sudkowskyj and many others.
