Oleksandr Murashko

Oleksandr Oleksandrowytsch Muraschko ( Ukrainian Олександр Олександрович Мурашко * August 26 ^{. Jul} / 7. September  1875 ^greg. In Kiev ; † 14. June 1919 ) was a Ukrainian painter and educator.

He spent his childhood as the illegitimate son of Maria Kratschkowska in the town of Borsna in the Chernigov governorate with his grandmother, a simple farmer. When his mother married the icon painter Oleksandr Muraschko, he came to Chernihiv , where his stepfather ran a painting workshop. At the end of the 1880s, the Muraschko family moved to Kiev, where father Muraschko received a lucrative job in the local St. Vladimir's Cathedral. Because of the conflicts with his stepfather, Oleksandr left home at the age of fifteen and has lived independently since then. He received support from his stepfather's brother, the owner of a painting school, Mykola Muraschko (1844–1909).

Oleksandr studied from 1894 at the Russian Imperial Art Academy in Saint Petersburg a . a. with Ilya Efimowitsch Repin . From 1901 to 1903 Oleksandr visited Paris and Munich . Since then, his painting has shown the influence of Impressionism and Art Nouveau .

In 1904 he returned to Saint Petersburg. His picture “Karussell” (1906) received a gold medal at the Munich art exhibition and brought him invitations to Berlin , Vienna , Paris , Amsterdam , Munich and Venice . From 1907 he was resident in Kiev again.

In 1911/1912 he took part in the Munich "Secession" exhibition .

In 1913 he opened his own studio in Kiev.

In 1917 he was a co-founder of the Kiev Art Academy , in 1918 he became a member of the advisory board of the National Commissariat for Education of the Ukrainian People's Republic .

In 1919 he was the victim of a robbery. He died at the age of 43 and was buried in the Lukjanivska cemetery .
