history

As early as 1852, Metropolitan Philaret suggested the construction of a cathedral to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity in the Kievan Rus (predecessor of the states of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus) by Vladimir the saint . The donation-financed construction began in 1859; the building itself was completed in 1882, the ornate interior was not completed until 1886. The cathedral was damaged in the Polish-Soviet War and was then used as an atheism museum, which also dealt with the topic of religion. It later became an archive. Since 1944 and after the Second World War , it was used again as a sacred building. Until the end of the Soviet Union , however, the priests were restricted in their activities.
