Rufin Hawrylowytsch Sudkowskyj ( Ukrainian Руфін Гаврилович Судковський , Russian Руфин Гаврилович Судковский / Rufin Gavrilovich Sudkowski * April 7 jul. / 19th April  1850 greg. In Ochakiv , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † February 4 jul. / February 16  1885 greg. Ibid) was a Ukrainian landscape painter .

Life

Sudkowskyj was born in Ochakiv, a town at the mouth of the Dnieper-Bug Liman in the Black Sea in what is now Ukraine, to a priestly family. Following the family tradition, he attended the theological school in Odessa from 1862 and, after two years, the theological seminary in Cherson, also in Odessa. During his studies, he began to paint, came into contact with the art scene in Odessa and finally decided to become a painter. In July 1868 he broke off the theological seminary and went to Saint Petersburg , where he began to study at the Imperial Art Academy . After his financial situation and his health had deteriorated while studying at the academy, he moved back to Ochakiv in the spring of 1871 after studying for two years and two months.

There he began to work independently as an artist. Although his creative work mostly took place in his hometown, he was always involved in the artistic life of Saint Petersburg, where he was accepted as a member of the Academy of Arts in 1877 as a second-degree artist and two years later as a first-degree artist. In 1874 and 1880 he toured Germany, France, Austria and Italy. He drew a lot of inspiration from these trips, which he incorporated into his subsequent work. In 1880 and 1881 there were exhibitions of his paintings in Saint Petersburg and Moscow, with art patron and collector Pavel Tretyakov buying paintings from him for his art collection . His works have also been exhibited in Antwerp , Berlin , Odessa, Kharkiv and Yekaterinburg . While organizing an exhibition in Kiev suggested by Mykola Muraschko, Sudkowskyj fell ill with typhus and returned to Ochakiv, where he died thirteen days later at the age of 34.

Sudkowskyj developed two themes at the same time in his native coastal town: the steppe and the sea. Many of his works also reflected Ukrainian folk life. However, his main theme was the element of water. He depicted the sea in different color and light effects, at different times of the year and day and in a variety of conditions. The most famous of his works are: Clear Water (1879–1884), Bay of Ochakiv (1881), The Silence of the Sea (1883 ) and rest of 1884. On April 28, 1982, a museum dedicated to him was set up in his house.

Paintings by Rufin Sudkowskyj are now including in the National Art Museum of Ukraine and the Kiev National Art Gallery ( Національний музей "Київська картинна галерея" ) in Kiev, the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Art Museum of Mykolaiv and the Art Museum of Luhansk .
