The Dnieper Bug Liman ( Ukrainian Дніпровсько-Бузький лиман ; Russian Днепро-Бугский лиман ; Crimean Tatar Usu-Limani ) is the largest estuary in the northwest of the Black Sea .

It is the confluence of the Dnieper and the Southern Bug and forms a liman in the Oblasts of Kherson and Mykolaiv in the south of Ukraine , which is bounded in the south by the Kinburn Peninsula and in a 4.3 km wide strait that is 11 m deep Kinburn Canal merges into the Black Sea at the port city of Ochakiv .

Emergence

The Liman was created by the penetration of the Black Sea into the lower reaches of the Dnieper and the Southern Bug as a result of the post-glacial rise in sea levels.

description

The Dnepr-Bug-Liman, already mentioned by Pliny and partially located in the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve, comprises two parts: First, the Ramsar area of the Dnepr-Liman / the Dnepr estuary with a length of 60 km (east-west) and a width of up to 17 km, an average depth of 4 meters, an area of 750 km² and a volume of 3 × 10 9  m³. Second, the Bug Liman / Bug Estuary, which lies on the north coast of the Dnieper Estuary. It is about 30 km long, between 5 and 11 km wide and has an average depth of 6 meters. Their area is 50 km². The Dnepr-Bug Liman has a maximum depth of 12 meters.

The southern bank of the Liman is mostly flat and sandy, on the north-eastern bank there are also high, hilly coasts, consisting mainly of clay and sand rocks, which reach a height of 20 to 35 meters. The bottom is muddy and there are sandbars along the estuary. Since about 25 to 30% of the annual water runoff from the Dnieper and the Southern Bug is used for irrigation and water supply, the salinity of the estuary water is increased, with an impact on the flora and fauna there.

The largest towns in the mouth of the two rivers are the cities of Kherson , Mykolaiv and Ochakiv. Other shore towns are on the north coast Kuzurub , Dmytriwka , Parutyne , Halyzynowe , Lymany , Oleksandriwka , Stanislaw , Schyroka Balka and on the Kinburn Peninsula in the south of Liman Pokrovske , Vasylivka , and Herojske and the east lying villages Wynohradne , Rybaltsche and Stara Sburjiwka . In the Liman, not far from Ochakiv, lies the artificially created island of Pervomajskyj and the Adschihol lighthouse on one of the island off the Rybaltsche village .
