The Black Sea Biosphere Reserve (Ukrainian Чорноморський біосферний заповідник / Tschornomorskij biosfernyj sapowidnyk , Russian Черноморский биосферный заповедник / Chernomorski biosfernyj sapowednik ) is located on the northern coast of the Black Sea , in the west of Hola Prystan Raion , about 45 km south-west of the Ukrainian City of Kherson . It includes shallow coastal waters, the landscape of the delta of the Dnieper , marshland, wetlands, dune areas and steppe landscapes. Due to the intensive agricultural use of the Ukrainian steppe landscape (not least because of the very fertile soils), the biosphere reserve has an important function in terms of protecting the typical, uncultivated landscape in the northern Black Sea region.

history

The biosphere reserve was established on July 14, 1927 as an institution of the former Soviet Union as a national nature park by resolution No. 174 "On the establishment of marine reserves of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov " of the Supreme Council of the USSR. On November 25, 1983, the National Academy of Sciences converted the nature park into a biosphere reserve, which was added to the international network of UNESCO biosphere reserves on February 13, 1985.

fauna

To date, 457 vertebrate species have been observed in the biosphere reserve; including 80 species of fish, 5 species of amphibians, 9 species of reptiles, 53 species of mammals and 306 species of birds. The thus very rich diversity of the bird population in the Black Sea biosphere reserve enjoys special protection in 3 protection zones in the biosphere reserve according to the Ramsar Convention .

Human influence factor

There are no human settlements in the biosphere reserve itself, but 12,000 people live permanently in the immediate vicinity of the reserve's borders. Fishing is the only economic activity within the reserve (in the buffer zones), but animal husbandry, silviculture, salt production and irrigation-intensive agriculture are practiced in the immediate vicinity. A natural history museum in the reserve promotes environmental protection among school children and the general public. An environmental organization for children is also coordinated through the administration of the biosphere reserve.
