Encyclopedia of Ukraine
The Encyclopedia of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Енциклопедія українознавства , German Encyclopedia of Ukraine ) is an encyclopedia published in English between 1984 and 1993 about Ukraine , its history , personalities, geography , economy and culture .
The five-volume encyclopedia is the most comprehensive work in English on the Ukraine with over 23,500 articles with 3,270 illustrations, photos, maps, diagrams and tables.
To date, twenty-five percent of this information is available in the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine .
It was initiated in 1976 by the Ukrainian historian, ethnographer, geographer and lexicographer Volodymyr Kubijowytsch and published between 1984 and 1993 by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) in Toronto , Canada ( University of Toronto Press).
Numerous scholars from the Ukrainian diaspora from all over the western world took part in the creation of the encyclopedia . The editor-in-chief was Volodymyr Kubijowytsch from 1978 to 1985 (editor of volumes 1 and 2) and from 1985 to 1999 Danylo Husar Struk (editor of volumes 3 to 5).
