Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) is a research institute for Ukrainian studies founded on July 1, 1976 in Edmonton, Canada at the University of Alberta , with a branch in Toronto.

history

Following the example of the American Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI), the Ukrainian diaspora, which is just as large in Canada as in the USA, gave impetus in 1976 to found another large institute for research and study in Ukraine . The CIUS has several programs or centers, some of which are named after their founders, for researching different subject areas, which are supplemented:

  • The Peter Jacyk Center for Ukrainian Historical Research (since 1989)
  • The Kule Ukrainian Canadian Studies Center
  • The Research Program on Religion and Culture (initiated by Bohdan Bociurkiw)
  • The Stasiuk Program for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine (since 1990)
  • The Kowalsky Program for the Study of Eastern Ukraine (since 1998)
  • The Danylo Struk Program in Ukrainian Literature.

The institute maintains close relationships with the American Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute.

The current director of CIUS - after well-known predecessors such as Bohdan Kravchenko, Frank E. Sysyn or Zenon E. Kohut - is now Volodymyr Kavchenko.

Editorial activity

The most important project of the CIUS Press was the publication of the 5-volume Encyclopedia of Ukraine , the articles of which are successively made available on the Internet with additions in the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine . A major project is the current English edition of the history of Ukraine by the Ukrainian historian Mychajlo Hruschewskyj . In addition, dissertations and monographs are continuously published by the in-house publishing house. The journal “Journal of Ukrainian Studies” has been published since 1980, and in 2014 it was renamed “East / West: journal of Ukrainian Studies”.
