Life
Mykola Iwasjuk was born to a craftsman and mechanic in the small town of Sastavna in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernivtsi . In 1884 he graduated from the orthodox secondary school in Chernivtsi and studied between 1885 and 1888 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and from 1890 to 1896 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .
From 1897 on he lived and worked in Chernivtsi, where in 1899 he founded an art school for gifted children from poor families. In 1915 he was arrested by Russian troops as an alleged "German spy" (his wife was German) and imprisoned in Rostov-on-Don . After his release he moved to Kiev in 1917, to Lemberg in 1919, and from there he later returned to Chernivtsi. In 1919, at the request of the government of the Ukrainian People's Republic, he created sketches for postage stamps for the new state.
At the end of 1926 he accepted an invitation from the People's Commissar and Head of the People's Commissar of the Ukrainian SSR Vlas Chubar to live permanently in the Ukrainian SSR and moved with his family to Kiev, where he was a professor at the Kiev Art Institute and from 1927 on the Ukrainian photo and cinema administration (ВУФКУ) worked. Here he painted film posters and pictures for the magazine "Cinema".
On September 18, 1937 he was arrested by the NKVD in his apartment on the pretext of being an active member of the Ukrainian nationalist terrorist organization and a German secret service agent and imprisoned in Lukyanivska prison . On November 14, 1937, he was sentenced to "death by shooting and the confiscation of his personal property" and shot 11 days later in Bykivnya , according to other sources in the October Palace . He was buried in Bykivnia in what is now the Kiev city of Rajon Darnytsia . In 1980 he was posthumously rehabilitated “for lack of evidence”.
Mykola Iwasjuk created more than 500 paintings throughout her life, the fate of which is largely unknown. Some of them are probably in private collections in Europe.
