memorial

Bykiwnja ( Ukrainian Биківня , Russian Быковня , Polish Bykownia ) is a forest in Stadtrajon Darnyzja in the east of the Ukrainian capital Kiev . Here are the remains of around 130,000 murdered people from the Stalinist era .

The graves were found at the end of July 2006 by the Polish archaeologist Andrzej Kola , in them he discovered more than 5000 pieces of uniform that he could assign to Polish army units. Identification by name was only possible in 9 cases. In addition to these mass graves, the remains of around 300 Italian soldiers were found who were shot here, as well as the graves of thousands of Soviet soldiers who deserted in 1941 and were therefore shot by the Soviet NKVD . On September 21, 2012, a new memorial dedicated to the victims of communist terror was opened in the presence of the Ukrainian and Polish presidents .
