Sastawna (Ukrainian and Russian Заставна ; German Zastawna , Romanian Zastavna , Polish Zastawna ) is a Rajons capital in the Ukrainian Oblast Chernivtsi . It is located about 25 km west of Chernivtsi , the name means something like "under the ponds" and is derived from the location of the many ponds in the area.
history
The city was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1589 and belonged to the Principality of Moldova until 1774 . From 1774 until 1918 he was part of Austria-Hungary and from 1849 in the crown land of Bukovina . The place developed slowly, in 1910 the train station to the north of the city center was opened on the local railway Werenczanka – Okna of the New Bukowina Local Railway Company, which opened in January 1910 , at the end of the empire the place was the seat of a district office and court City appointed.
After the end of the First World War, the place came to Romania (in the Cernăuți district ). In the course of the annexation of North Bukovina on June 28, 1940, it became part of the Soviet Union (again to Romania between 1941 and 1944) and has been part of Ukraine since 1991.
