Kelmenzi (Ukrainian Кельменці ; Russian Кельменцы / Kelmenzy , Romanian Chelmenţi ) is an urban-type settlement in the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernivtsi . It is located in the east of the oblast near the border with the Republic of Moldova , about 69 km northeast of Chernivtsi and about 5 kilometers from the southern border with Moldova.
history
The settlement was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1559 and then belonged to the Principality of Moldova until 1711 , after which it was part of the Ottoman Empire until Bessarabia was ceded to Russia in 1812. In 1892 the place got a rail connection, after the end of the First World War it came to Romania (in the Hotin district ), but became part of the Soviet Union on August 2, 1940 during the annexation of Bessarabia (again to Romania between 1941 and 1944) and since 1991 part of Ukraine.
In 1960 it was granted the status of an urban-type settlement, and since then it has also been the district center of Kelmenzi district .
