Novoselytsia (Ukrainian Новоселиця ; Russian Новоселица / Novoselitsa , German Nowosielitza or rarely Unterstrojestie , Romanian Noua Sulita or Sulita ; polish Nowosielica ) is a Rajonshauptstadt in the Ukrainian oblast Tscherniwzi with 7600 population (2016). It is located on the left bank of the Prut , about 26 km east of Chernivtsi in the area of northern Bessarabia and eastern Bukovina .

history

The city was first mentioned in writing in 1456, during which time it was part of the Hotin Land in the historical region of Bessarabia of the Principality of Moldova and was called Nouăsuliţa de Sus. It then belonged to the Principality of Moldova until 1812 .

After the end of the Russo-Turkish War from 1806 to 1812, the Treaty of Bucharest on May 28, 1812 agreed to cede the territories of the principality east of the Prut to the Russian Empire . The part to the west of the river had already been incorporated into the new crown land of Bukovina by Austria in 1775 (often also called Austrian Nowosielitza as opposed to Russian Nowosielitza ). Between the two districts, the Pruth was the triangle between Austria, Russia and Romania until 1918 .

On July 12, 1884, the Chernivtsi – Novosielitza line of the Bukovina Local Railways was opened and in 1893, through the construction of a new station with systems for standard and Russian broad gauge, it was connected to the railway network of the Russian Southern Railways .

By connecting the Bukovina and Bessarabia to Romania after the First World War, the city in 1919 came as a whole to Romania (in the county of Hotin ), but was during the Soviet annexation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina on August 2, 1940, a part of the Soviet Union (between 1941 –1944 again to Romania).

Since 1991 the city has been a part of independent Ukraine and a district administrative center. According to the 1989 census, the population of Romanian descent was 3,318, which was 40.54% of the population.

In the city center is the building of the former synagogue , which has particularly beautiful paintings on the ceiling and walls. It is in a bad structural condition and the interior is not freely accessible.
