Synagogue in Novoselytsia (2019)

The New Great Synagogue in Novoselytsia in the Chernivtsi Oblast of Ukraine was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The ceiling and wall paintings are of particular interest.

history

The synagogue was built in 1919. It was used as such until the Second World War . After that it was rebuilt and used as the house of the pioneers . The paintings on the walls and the ceiling were plastered with lime mortar, which saved them from being destroyed. They were rediscovered and uncovered in 2009.

The building has been empty and in poor condition since the end of the Soviet Union .

architecture

The synagogue has an almost rectangular floor plan with external dimensions of approximately 16.40 × 14.20 m. The walls are about 6 m high to the roof ledge and 10.5 m high to the top of the gable roof.

Above the vestibule in the western part of the building were the women's prayer rooms; the main hall was in the eastern part. Partition walls were put in during the renovations to the pioneer house.

A niche for the Torah shrine can no longer be seen.
