The Chortkiv – Luzhany railway is a branch line in Ukraine . It runs from Chortkiv , a small town in the southern parts of Ternopil Oblast via Salishchyky , a small town on the Dniester to Luschany , a small town northwest of Chernivtsi in Chernivtsi Oblast .

The operation is led by the Ukrainian railways , in particular the Lvivska Salisnyzja . The entire line is single-track and not electrified.

Today's railway line consists of two parts and the branch line to Wikno :

On the one hand , the local railway Białaczortkowska – Zaleszczyki , located on the territory of the Austrian Galicia at that time , which was opened on November 15, 1898 with a route length of 51.038 kilometers by the joint stock company of the East Galician Local Railways , the line was licensed on January 23, 1894.

On the other hand, from the local railway Luzan – Zaleszczyki (route length 43.541 kilometers) opened in the Austrian Crown Land of Bukowina on July 12, 1898 by the New Bukowinaer Lokalbahn-Gesellschaft (concession of the line on January 23, 1895), this was following the already since The Lemberg – Chernivtsi line of the Lemberg-Chernivtsi-Jassy railway was built in 1866 .

The branch line to Wikno was opened in several stages by the New Bukowina Local Railway Company as the Werenczanka – Okna local railway (23.246 kilometers). The Werenczanka - Jurkoutz section on October 17, 1909, the rest of the route to what was then Okna on January 1, 1910.

After the end of the First World War , the section to Zaleszczyki came under Polish rule and was now served by the Polish State Railways (PKP), the southern part came to Greater Romania and was incorporated into its state railways Căile Ferate Române , the route connection across the Romanian-Polish border But over the Dniester was retained and a corridor traffic to Kolomyja was carried out.

Due to the occupation of eastern Poland by the Soviet Union shortly after the start of the Second World War in 1939, the Polish part of the line came into the possession of the Soviet railways , which immediately began to re-gauge individual lines. After the annexation of northern Bukovina in 1940, the Romanian section was added, on the line also began to change gauges to broad gauge, but this was reversed after Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and the lines of the Eastern Railway were subordinated. The route Czortkow - Zaleszczyki was given the number 534n.

The end of the Second World War brought eastern Poland and northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union and, under the leadership of the Soviet railways, all standard-gauge railways were switched to broad gauge, and the line has been in broad gauge ever since.

The branch line to Wikno is no longer served by passenger traffic, the station and the line to Sastawna are only kept open for freight traffic purposes.
