The railway line Lviv (Lemberg) -Tscherniwzi (Chernivtsi) is a main highway in Ukraine . The single-track, non-electrified line runs through Galicia and Bukovina in western Ukraine and is served by the Ukrainian railways , especially the Lvivska Salisnyzja .

Station building in Ivano-Frankivsk

history

The railway line is one of the oldest and was licensed on January 11, 1864 for the then Lemberg-Czernowitz Railway . Because of the not too difficult geographical conditions, the construction could be carried out relatively quickly and so the line in the Austrian crown lands Galicia and Bukowina was opened on September 1, 1866 between Lemberg and Chernivtsi . It was built and operated by the Lemberg-Chernivtsi-Jassy Railway Company (LCJE).

Soon after the start of operations, however, the number of complaints about the railroad operations increased, and so the operation was placed under public administration from October 7, 1872 to July 31, 1875. Due to the poor economic efficiency of the company, the operation of the railway line was carried out from July 1, 1889 by the kk Austrian State Railways , but it remained formally part of the company. After the end of the First World War , the railway was now in 2 different countries, the section from Lemberg (Polish: Lwów) to Śniatyn came to Poland, the short stretch between Nepolocăuți and the now Cernăuți called Czernowitz came to Romania and was taken over by the Romanian State Railways and operated. The Polish line was operated by the Polish State Railways , and on March 24, 1928, the line officially became their property. During the Second World War , the Polish line was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1939 , and in 1940, after the annexation of Northern Bukovina, the Romanian section was added, and gauge change to broad gauge began on the line. After the German attack on the Soviet Union and the reconquest of northern Bukovina by Romanian troops in the summer of 1941, this was reversed. After the end of the Second World War, these areas came back to the Soviet Union. The railway line was switched to broad gauge (1520 mm), but the single track was retained.
