Purity ring
A Purity Ring ( English purity purity ) is a symbol of chastity movement , which had in the 1990s in the United States originated. The purity ring is also known as the chastity ring , promise ring or abstinence ring . It symbolizes the virtue of chastity ; often a verse from the Bible or the conviction "Worth the Wait" is engraved in the ring .
With the ring, the wearer expresses that he or she has made the promise to wait until after the marriage with sexual intercourse ( virginity pledge , " promise of abstinence"). The ring is given to the spouse at the wedding as a gift and a symbol of their own purity.

In the United States , wearing a purity ring is a common phenomenon among teenagers. Parents also occasionally wear the ring to show that they support their children in their decision.
The Christian faith plays a more important role in everyday life in large parts of the country than in Germany, for example. The abstinence movement in the United States is a program by Christian conservatives and the government related, among other things, to the increasing number of teenage pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases . The first program to convince young people of the benefits of sexual abstinence was started by the Baptists in the southern states in 1987. This resulted in the True Love Waits movement in 1993 , which is supported by Protestants , Catholics and Christians of other denominations . The main focus of the movement is the United States. With the offshoot “ Wahre Liebe Wartet ”, the association has also become well known in the German-speaking world. Movements like Silver Ring Thing are also expanding their campaigns internationally.
In England , the case of Lydia Playfoot attracted attention, who was expelled from school when she refused to take off her purity ring on the instructions of the school administration. Playfoot and some of her classmates were members of The Silver Ring Thing movement. Sikhs and Muslim classmates, however, were allowed to wear armbands and headscarves at the school.
Legislation and funding
The then US President George W. Bush advocated the abstinence campaign morally and supported it financially through appropriate legislation. Conservative Christian organizations thus gained influence and political say during his tenure. Bush himself professes the values of Christianity and worked with these groups. The result of this cooperation was legislation with the funding of the abstinence program in the millions.
The Silver Ring Thing movement received over $ 1 million from the United States government through 2005 to market the idea and purity rings.
Organizations and events
Various Christian organizations, especially in the United States, advocate abstinence. One example is the Silver Ring Thing movement . Silver Ring Thing was founded in 1995 by clergyman Denny Pattyn in the state of Arizona . In 2000, SRT moved to Pittsburgh and organized many events annually across the United States from there. The movement believes that prevention is not in front of a premarital pregnancy could protect, but only a change of their own behavior, so the decision to sexual abstinence .
In the United States, schools and communities regularly organize purity balls , at which young people promise to abstain from sex before marriage and receive a purity ring or bracelet in return. The first of these official chastity events took place in the US state of Colorado in 1998 . By 2006 the number of balls had increased to 1,400. According to some studies, the organizers seem to have great success over shorter periods of time; other studies have shown that only a small proportion actually remain true to the resolution until the wedding. By 2005, over three and a half million teenagers in the United States had taken a vow of abstinence. A 2001 study showed that only 12 percent of the 2.5 million teenagers who had promised abstinence by 1995 remained abstinent until marriage. A resolution to abstain before marriage can, according to the study, delay the sexual act by an average of 18 months. Among those who do not remain faithful to the resolution they have taken, a third have the possibility that they will not use contraception .
In the past ten years, Silver Ring Thing has organized more than 700 events in cooperation with local clergy, for example in April 2010 at Martinsburg High School in West Virginia .
Symbol value
The ring is a visible sign of abstinence in relation to premarital intercourse . The ring is not considered a piece of jewelry, but a symbol and constant reminder of the promise.
Famous porters
As early as 1999, US pop singer Britney Spears spoke out in favor of abstinence before marriage; she can be seen as a prominent pioneer of the chastity movement. The media criticized this assertion, however, as a calculation for successful image marketing. Today it is especially the young stars from the forge of the Disney Channel who publicly profess abstinence. Young actors like Miley Cyrus , Demi Lovato and Hilary Duff wore the Purity Ring. Justin Bieber , Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez , who were once also bearers of the ring, have now taken it off.
Effects
Studies of the purity ring are being conducted in the United States, where the law restricts federal government support to sex education programs promoting abstinence, many of which place promises of abstinence important.
Janet Rosenbaum of the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University published a 2006 study using data from 7th to 12th grade teenagers from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health . 53% of those who stated in the first survey in 1994 that they had made a promise of abstinence denied this in the follow-up survey a year later. Of these, nearly three quarters were sexually active in the previous year. Among those who did not keep their promise, 63% of the youth who had turned away from the revival movement were particularly common .
