True love is waiting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Wahre Liebe Wartet" - Germany ( WLW ), based in Bensheim, was the German branch of the international Christian movement True Love Waits (TLW) , an offshoot of the chastity movement , which was active especially in the first decade of the 21st century .

history

On December 16, 1987, on behalf of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in the United States , Jimmy Hester began a program to encourage young people to abstain from sex before marriage. In 1992, the name True Love Waits was developed for movement during a brainstorming session . In addition to Protestants and Catholics , members of other denominations were also involved in the movement. In 1993 the first youth group from the Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Hermitage, Tennessee signed the commitment. By 1994 over 100,000 commitment cards had been signed. According to the company, around three million letters of commitment had been issued worldwide by 2012.

Germany

True Love Waiting was founded in the 1980s in the Swabian Kirchenkirnberg at an annual general meeting of the Association Christians for Truth (cft), which can be viewed as a political and cultural organization of the Mission Kwasizabantu (KSB) and is identical in terms of personnel . The Switzerland-based organization, which was renamed Christianity for Today in October 2018 , campaigns, among other things, in the right to life movement , against gender mainstreaming and for the preservation and promotion of Christian values in general. Other evangelical or free church associations also support the Wahre Liebe Wartet campaign , such as the Altensteig youth, mission and social organization .

Goal setting and activities

True Love Waits touted sexual abstinence before marriage among adolescents and young adults . Of the numerous associations of American origin that propagate chastity , Wahre Liebe Wartet was the only one that gained a certain degree of notoriety in German-speaking countries. All members signed a so-called " Commitment card ", the original text of which reads:

"Believing that true love waits, I make a commitment to God, myself, my family, my friends, my future mate, and my future children to be sexually abstinent from this day until the day I enter a biblical marriage relationship."

"Believing that true love is waiting, I make a commitment before God, to myself, my family, my friends, my future spouse, and my future children, to abstain from sex from that day until the day of my church marriage."

In Germany, the campaign in 2006 had around 10,000 followers between the ages of 16 and early 20. The campaign's German website has not been maintained since 2011 and has been offline since mid-2018.

In Switzerland, the “True Love Waits” campaign was based in Zurich . Again, the carrier was the Kwasizabantu Mission. According to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , the movement had around 3,000 sympathizers in 2000. From January 2011, the movement was temporarily called Preciousyouth in Switzerland , and since mid-2012 it has been called Young 'n Precious .

Also in France, Belgium and the Netherlands the action was or is under the patronage of Kwasizabantu.

criticism

In the United States, True Love Waits also provides teachers with educational materials for teaching sex education in public schools. The key message is that sexual abstinence prevents unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases . Critics object that in this way young people are left to a one-sided and inadequate sex education . Some studies found that students who made promises of abstinence were less likely to use a condom for their first intercourse .

A study by Columbia University and Yale University found that an adolescent who made a pledge of abstinence was about as likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease as those who did not make a pledge. The study found that promises of chastity postpone the first sexual intercourse by about a year and a half. It was TrueLoveWaits explicitly mentioned in the study: "From 12,000 teenagers aged 12 to 18 who completed the TLW program had in six years after the program 88% pre-marital sex."
