life and career

Early years

Demi Lovato was born in Albuquerque, but grew up in Dallas ( Texas ), and refers to this day as their home. Her parents separated when she was two years old. In various interviews from 2012, she said that she had not had contact with her father for five years and was also not interested in changing this. Lovato has Mexican , Italian, and Irish ancestry. She has an older sister named Dallas Leigh Lovato (born February 4, 1988), and Madison De La Garza (born December 28, 2001) is her half-sister, who comes from her mother's marriage to Eddie De La Garza; the two have been married since 2000. She also has an older half-sister named Amber, who she only found out about as an adult. Lovato's stepfather used to work as a manager at a Ford dealership but gave up his job and has been her manager since 2008. Lovato was brought up Baptist , but today no longer belongs to any particular denomination of Christianity . She regularly prays with her band before performances.

Lovato said that from the age of twelve, she suffered bullying from classmates who, among other things, made fun of her body weight and her ambitions as an actress. For this reason, Lovato asked her mother for private tuition and received her high school diploma in April 2009 , two years earlier than usual. In 2011, Lovato announced that she had had an "unhealthy relationship with food" since she was eight; she vomited up to six times a day, and her parents thought the resulting weight loss was due to puberty . She also suffered from self-harming behavior in her childhood .

Career start

In 2012, Lovato said she took acting classes and auditioned for talent agencies when she was around five years old ; for example, she auditioned for the children's series Barney and Friends , but didn't get the role because she couldn't read at the time. Two years later she went to another casting of this series and this time got the role of the girl Angela , who played Lovato for two years.

After the Barney and Friends series ended , Lovato took guitar , piano , singing and dance lessons and continued her acting classes . Her family had to put a mortgage on what was then their Dallas home to pay for Lovato's tuition.

In January 2007, Lovato received the role of Charlotte Adams in the series Endlich Pause! . She only appeared in the first season, but was able to draw attention to herself as a singer. In the summer of 2007, Lovato went to an audition for the series JONAS , which also featured the band Jonas Brothers . Ultimately, she didn't get the role and described this experience as "the hardest rejection I've ever received". A few weeks later she went to the casting of the series Sonny Munroe (original title: Sonny with a Chance ) and the casting of the television film Camp Rock , both castings took place on the same day. Eventually after being invited to a meeting, Gary Marsh , Disney's entertainment chairman, asked her to sing in front of all Walt Disney corporate executives in attendance. She chose the song Is not No Other Man by Christina Aguilera , and Bob Cavallo , vice president and general manager of the record label Hollywood Records , later said in an interview that they had "folded down the jaw." Lovato later received both the roles of Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock and the part of Sonny Munroe for the television series of the same name and also signed a recording deal with Hollywood Records. In early 2008 she also signed a contract with Jonas Records , the Jonas Brothers record label.

On June 20, 2008, Camp Rock ran for the first time on the US Disney Channel . The film, in which Lovato plays a girl who is attending a music camp and who is hoping to become a singer in the future, achieved an average audience rating of 8.9 million. With this response, the film was the second most successful at the time after High School Musical 2 , which had attracted 17.2 million viewers the year before. In Germany, too, where ProSieben had received the rights for the first broadcast, the target group achieved good ratings. A total of around 1.56 million viewers tuned in in September, corresponding to a market share of 5.8 percent. A market share of 25.2 percent was achieved in the age range of three to 13 year olds and 30.6 percent among 14 to 19 year olds. However, as the age of the audience increased, the odds fell sharply.

The film's soundtrack also proved to be a success. It contained several songs with Lovato's participation and reached number three in the USA and top ten placements in Germany, Austria and Great Britain, among others. It has sold around 2.5 million times worldwide. The song This Is Me , a duet by Lovato with Joe Jonas and her first commercially released single, reached number nine on the US charts and is still her highest ranking there today.

In September 2008, Lovato's debut album Don't Forget was released in the US and reached number two with 89,000 units sold. The album was created in collaboration with the Jonas Brothers, who wrote a large number of the songs together with Lovato. They also took over the production together with John Fields . In June, Lovato had already launched their first smaller promotional tour called Demi Live! Warm Up Tour wore their debut album advertised; later she joined the Jonas Brothers 'Burnin' Up tour . To advance her career, she and her family moved from Dallas to Toluca Lake in Los Angeles in the fall of 2008 .

In February, the Disney Channel began airing the first season of Sonny with a Chance . The series ran in Germany under the title Sonny Munroe . In the series, Lovato plays a girl who gets a role in her favorite series with the help of an application video and therefore moves from Wisconsin to Hollywood . In her new life, she is confronted with all kinds of problems related to being famous, but also to everyday life. The total of 21 episodes reached an average of almost four million viewers per program.

On June 26, 2009, the television film Princesses Protection Program ran for the first time on the US Disney Channel, in which Selena Gomez can be seen in addition to Lovato . Lovato plays a princess in the film, whose homeland is threatened by a dictator, which is why she is brought to Louisiana in the USA by the princess protection program . There she lives under an alias with the American family of Carter Mason , played by Gomez, and has to deal with everyday things. The film reached a rate of 8.5 million viewers, making it the channel's fourth most successful film.

In July, the second studio album Lovatos was released in the USA, which is called Here We Go Again . In its first week, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 108,000 units sold . To promote the album, she had already joined the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 for several shows in South America and Europe in May and June . These were her first appearances outside of North America. Then she went on her first major concert tour called Demi Lovato Live in Concert . She initially played 41 shows in the USA under the name Summer Tour 2009 before continuing the tour under the name Fall Tour 2009 with a few concerts in October and November. In November she rejoined the European concerts on the Jonas Brothers' world tour, during which she could also be seen in Germany for the first time. In May 2010 she finished her own tour, this time under the name South America Tour 2010 in South America.

In March 2010, the US Disney Channel began broadcasting the second season of Sonny Munroe , which this time consisted of 26 episodes. The audience ratings improved slightly compared to the first season and reached an average of just over four million viewers. In May, Lovato made a guest appearance on the sixth season of the doctor series Grey's Anatomy . There she played a girl with schizophrenia who was hospitalized. Although the episode's audience ratings were below the season average, Lovato received good reviews for its performance and received a People's Choice Award in the Favorite TV Guest Star category .

On September 3, 2010, the second Camp Rock film ran on the US Disney Channel. The sequel was called Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and Lovato again played the part of Mitchie Torres . The premiere was seen by around eight million people, which means the rate has decreased by around 0.9 million viewers compared to the previous one. In Germany, ProSieben again took over the broadcast on free TV and here too the ratings were worse than with the predecessor. While in 2008 around 1.56 million viewers tuned in and achieved a market share of 5.8 percent, Camp Rock 2 only reached 1.29 million people and a share of 4.3 percent. The market share among 14 to 49 year olds was 7.5 percent.

The soundtrack for the sequel had already appeared in August and, like the album for the first film, debuted at number three in the USA. In the German-speaking countries, however, it did not build on the success of its predecessor and did not reach the top ten. To promote the music, the cast of the film joined the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert World Tour 2010 , which ran from August to November and took them to North America, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Asia. Lovato left the tour on October 30th, a few weeks before its official end, to seek treatment for physical and emotional issues .

Since autumn 2010, Lovato is no longer under contract with the Jonas Records label , but with Hollywood Records .

In late 2010 she moved from Toluca Lake to Sherman Oaks , where she has lived with her family ever since.

In September 2011, Lovato released their third studio album called Unbroken , which reached number four in the US with 96,000 units sold in the first week. During the recordings she worked with Timbaland , Jason Derulo and Ryan Tedder , among others . The album spawned two singles that are her most commercially successful song releases to date: Skyscraper and Give Your Heart a Break . After its release, Skyscraper reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 32 in the UK and, like Give Your Heart a Break , was later awarded a platinum record for one million units sold in the US. Private life

Hospital stay 2010/2011

On October 30, 2010, Lovato left the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert World Tour 2010 , which she was on at the time, to be admitted to a rehabilitation clinic. The reason she cited were physical and emotional problems that she had been suffering from for a while . However, she looks forward to going back to work in the future. As a result of this news, several news magazines and blogs unanimously reported that the decision to seek treatment was made immediately after an incident on a flight from Bogotá , Colombia , to the nearest tour station, where Lovato slapped her backing dancer Alex Welch in the face. In late December 2010, Lovato's lawyers reached a financial settlement with Welch, who then announced that they would donate the money to a charity.

On January 28, 2011, it was reported that Lovato had finished her inpatient treatment and had returned to Los Angeles to continue her health care. In March, a video was uploaded to the Cambio website thanking her fans for their support during the darkest time of their lives . She also announced that she would be back to work soon. In mid-April, Lovato gave her first interview since her return on Robin Roberts' shows Good Morning America and 20/20 . Both parts had been recorded beforehand. During the interview, she confirmed rumors that she was staying at the Timberline Knolls Clinic near Chicago , Illinois , for treatment for bulimia and self-harm . She also confirmed the argument between her and the dancer Alex Welch, saying that she would take full responsibility for what happened. She also stated in later interviews that she tried to self- medicate using alcohol and other drugs to relieve her pain. She also said she had practically had a nervous breakdown prior to the encounter with the dancer and that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during her stay in the clinic .

Life after addiction

During the tour stop in Brooklyn on March 16, 2018, DJ Khaled and Kehlani surprisingly appeared on stage to congratulate her on six years of abstinence and to join the audience in a Happy Birthday . On June 21, 2018, the song Sober was released without any promotion, in which she addresses her truth and asks family members, fans and herself for the relapse at the time. The next day, her closest employees, including her manager, her stylists and her bodyguard, posed with a free tattoo on their little finger to show their solidarity.

Relapse

In late July 2018, Lovato was hospitalized presumably for a heroin overdose. Two weeks later, Lovato thanked her fans for the encouragement and attributed the abuse to her illness. She noted that this type of disease does not just go away, but that it takes a long way to overcome it. At the end of January 2019, Lovato announced in a statement on Instagram that she had been free of all drugs, including alcohol, for six months.

Relationships

In addition to several shorter relationships, including with Cody Linley (spring 2008) and Joe Jonas (March to May 2010), she was in a relationship with actor Wilmer Valderrama from summer 2010 to June 2016 . In July 2020, she announced her engagement to singer Max Ehrich .

Over the summer of 2010, it organized various events in shopping centers in the USA, which combined musical and fashion factors and offered the opportunity to take part in the event interactively through games and competitions. She is also the face of the anti-bullying organization PACER . She commented on this in an interview with the New York Post . She would deal very seriously with the subject of bullying, since she was the victim of bullying attacks herself when she was twelve years old. Now she wants to encourage other girls to be more self-confident about their skin, size and themselves. She also supports the Join the Surge Campaign! , a joint campaign by DoSomething.org and the Clean & Clear brand , which aims to encourage young people to get involved in their community.

On December 23, 2011, Lovato used her Twitter reach to cover the Disney Channel for some episodes of the Shake It Up and So Random! criticize jokes about eating disorders. The broadcaster responded immediately, publicly apologizing for broadcasting it to a young audience, and removing the episodes from its TV and video-on-demand programs.

Furthermore, Lovato was part of the organization Disney's Friends for Change , which promotes environmentally friendly behavior on behalf of the Disney Channel and has set itself the goal of creating awareness for the environment. In this context, she recorded the song Send It On with the Jonas Brothers , Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez in 2009 , which was later released as a promotional sound carrier and reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the theme song of the organization for some time.
