The City of Hope National Medical Center is a private, non-profit cancer clinic in Duarte, California .

history

The City of Hope emerged from a tuberculosis hospital founded in 1914 by the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association outside the city limits of Los Angeles called "Los Angeles Sanatorium". After the Second World War , tuberculosis could be treated with antibiotics , and the hospital developed into a general clinic with a research institute and medical training.

With the licensing of patents of two researchers at City of Hope, Keiichi Itakura and Arthur D. Riggs at Genentech in 1978 first synthetic insulin made for people.
