When political unrest breaks out in her country and an evil dictator takes power, Princess "Rosalinda Maria Montoya Fiore Princesa de Costa Luna" is rescued by the Princess Protection Program and escorted into safe exile by Major Mason in Louisiana . There she has to pretend to be a teenager . She is given the code name Rosie Gonzales and is billeted in Mason's house in his daughter Carter's room. Carter, who is supposed to teach Rosie how to act like an ordinary teenager, cannot make friends with her at first until she learns from Rosie what she went through. Although Rosie tries to adapt to hide her very elegant, agile and at the same time casually superior manner , she quickly catches the eye of the school staff with her solid etiquette , her dignified demeanor and her multilingualism . The other youngsters find her very likeable and so she quickly becomes popular.

As the election of this year's Homecoming Queen approaches, classmates Chelsea and Brooke, both of whom are striving for the crown, try to prevent Rosie from running because her solidity and popularity make it a serious competitor. They manipulate the election and try to corrupt and ridicule it. To force them to give up their candidacy, they threaten to reveal their true identity, which they discovered by chance. Rosie learns from the press that the coup leader General Magnus Kane wants to marry her mother. Therefore she wants to return to Costa Luna immediately to thwart the wedding (the announcement was only faked to lure her back). But Carter can persuade her to linger until the ball ends and wait for the queen to be elected this year. Meanwhile, Carter, who was also elected to the final, is convinced by Rosie that it is not about pomp but about inner values, and that one of the most important virtues of a princess is to treat other people with benevolence .

General Magnus Kane learns the exact location of the dance ball and sets off on the day of freestyle by helicopter to the hard site to Princess Rosalinda to procrastinate .
