recognition

Despite the many differences in individual districts , the degree is recognized throughout the United States. However, it does not automatically represent a university entrance qualification. This is mainly due to the fact that all performance groups have the same degree and therefore no general performance statement has to be made depending on the courses attended. This problem is alleviated in the USA by the requirement of "transcripts" with the degrees of difficulty and grades (Grade Point Average, GPA) of the individual subjects attended, as well as by placement tests such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) solved. It is also possible to take a GED test (General Educational Development), which does not correspond to the High School Diploma, but is regarded as proof of a certain general education .

High School Diploma in Germany

A US high school diploma is generally recognized in Germany as an intermediate secondary school leaving certificate or, in combination with a correspondingly high result in the SAT or ACT, as an Abitur (general higher education entrance qualification). For certain subject combinations, he is also awarded the qualification for a technical college in Germany . The choice of at least two foreign languages as well as teaching in natural science / mathematics and music / cultural subjects, so-called study-related (advanced placement) subjects, are decisive for certification of the general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification .

At many high schools in the United States, in addition to the High School Diploma, the more demanding International Baccalaureate is optionally offered, which is also recognized in Germany as proof of general university entrance qualification.
