Scooter Braun (born June 18, 1981 in New York ; actually Scott Braun ) is an American entrepreneur, talent manager, investor, and philanthropist. As the founder of the entertainment and media company SB Projects, Braun represents Justin Bieber , Ariana Grande , Psy , Carly Rae Jepsen , Dan + Shay , Zac Brown Band , Kanye West , Demi Lovato and Tori Kelly, among others . He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016 . Braun is also co-founder of the comic film studio Mythos Studios together with Hollywood producer David Maisel.

Early years

Braun was born in New York to conservative Jewish parents Ervin and Susan (nee Schlüssel) Braun. Ervin's parents "narrowly escaped the Holocaust " and lived in Hungary until 1956 . Shortly before the Soviet Union invaded to suppress the Hungarian uprising , they fled to the United States. Ervin grew up in Queens and became a dentist ; Susan Schlüssel Braun was an orthodontist. After they got married, they moved to Greenwich , Connecticut .

Braun has four siblings: Liza, Cornelio, Sam and Adam Braun. Adam Braun is the founder of Pencils of Promise, a charity that focuses on building schools in developing countries.

Braun grew up in Cos Cob, a borough of Greenwich, and attended Greenwich High School, where he was elected class representative. He played basketball in the Amateur Athletic Union with the Connecticut Flames from ages 13 to 18 . When Braun was 17, his parents adopted Sam Mahanga and Cornelio Giubunda, former members of the Mozambique Junior National Team . Since he was without a team at the time, as the basketball sports program had grown morose, Ervin Braun recruited them for an All-Star tournament. Mahanga and Giubunda became stars on the Greenwich High School basketball team despite being interrupted with heckling by fans - a thing that struck the Brauns tremendously. While at Greenwich High School, Braun took part in a video documentary film competition on the occasion of National History Day with a 10-minute video entitled "The Hungarian Conflict" on the subject of Jews in Hungary , during and after the Holocaust. The film won regional and state competitions and took third place overall. A member of the Braun family sent the film to director Steven Spielberg's office , who submitted the Braun video to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum . Braun said that Spielberg's confirmation was one of the most inspiring moments in his life.

Braun went to college at Emory University in Atlanta , where he also played college basketball through his sophomore year. After Jermaine Dupri offered him the position of marketing director for his label "So So Def", Braun reportedly left university without a degree.

Career

Braun began his career organizing parties while studying at Emory University in Atlanta . In 2002 Braun was tasked with planning after-parties in each of the five cities on the Anger Management Tour with Ludacris and Eminem . This start in the world of hip-hop led Braun to producer Jermaine Dupri , the director of So So Def Recordings. Braun was 19 years old when Dupri offered him a position in marketing for "So So Def" and 20 when Dupri appointed him executive director for marketing for "So So Def". When he was still in his second year with Emory, Braun worked at "So So Def" and ran his party promotion business. Some of its major events were parties to the 2003 NBA All-Star Game and after-parties at the Onyx Hotel Tour of Britney Spears . Braun left “So So Def” to start a private company with a marketing business, music label and artist management. He started his own marketing business by negotiating a $ 12 million campaign between Ludacris and Pontiac; the music video for Ludacris' Two Miles an Hour featured a Pontiac, and the song was featured in Pontiac commercials.

Braun saw Justin Bieber for the first time on YouTube , where the 12-year-old sang the song Ne-Yo . Braun reached out to Bieber's mother, Pattie Mallette, who agreed to bring her son to Atlanta for a trial period that was not subject to any conditions. Ultimately, Braun convinced the two of them to move permanently from Canada to the United States. After further success online, Braun Bieber suggested the two successful artists Usher and Justin Timberlake ; both were interested. Eventually, Bieber signed a deal with Usher's mentor, LA Reid Music Manager , The Island Def Jam Music Group in partnership with the Raymond-Braun Media Group.

In July 2019, Braun bought the music label Big Machine, which owns all of Taylor Swift's albums . The Wall Street Journal valued the deal at $ 300 million. Other musicians under Big Machine include Florida Georgia Line , Thomas Rhett , Rascal Flatts and Lady Antebellum . Swift called him a tyrant and wants to acquire the rights to their music.

Movie and TV

Braun produced "Never Say Never," a documentary about Justin Bieber's pop launch, which MTV named "one of the highest grossing music documentaries in US history in 2011." The budget for the film was $ 13 million , grossed over US $ 100 million worldwide and is still the biggest box office hit among documentaries. Braun is also executive producer on the television series "Scorpion" on CBS. His first attempt at a television series, "Scorpion," ran four seasons and topped 26 million viewers when it premiered in 2014. In 2018, Variety reported that television studio FX commissioned a pilot for an untitled comedy series produced by Braun and with starring actor Kevin Hart and rapper Lil Dicky .

SB Projects

In 2007 Braun founded SB Projects, a full service entertainment and marketing company that includes a number of companies including Schoolboy Records, SB Management and Sheba Publishing, a songwriting company. The group also includes RBMG, a joint venture between Braun and Usher. School Boy Records has a music distribution agreement with Universal Music Group . In early 2013, Ariana Grande joined Scooter Braun's management team, and in 2016 Grande's label, Republic Records , confirmed that Braun was their main manager, handling all aspects of her career. SB Ventures also takes care of television campaigns, branding, music licensing deals and sponsorship for touring - like u. a. supporting Calvin Klein for Justin Bieber's Purpose World Tour 2016–2017. The company also negotiated a partnership between Kanye West and sneaker brand Adidas .

Ithaca Ventures, Braun's holding company to which SB Projects is a part, raised $ 120 million in venture capital in 2010 for investments such as Uber, Spotify and Editorialist. Fortune reported that Ithaca Ventures has an interest in seven of the largest music management companies in the country. Media outlets reported that Ithaca - with $ 500 million under management in 2018 - would help GoodStory Entertainment, a collaboration between Braun and entertainment manager JD Roth , acquire improvised, live events and documentaries.

Myth Studios

The New York Times reported in 2018 that Braun will join forces with David Maisel, founding chairman of Marvel Studios, to found Mythos Studios to create comic book franchises in live action and animation formats.

In 2018, Braun was awarded the Music Biz 2018 Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic efforts in 2017.

philanthropy

Braun continues to participate in various charities such as the Braun Family Foundation. Many of the artists that Braun signs take part in various philanthropic initiatives. Braun is best known for his support for Pencils of Promise, founded by his younger brother, Adam Braun. The younger brother got his inspiration when he asked a child in India what he wanted, to which he received the answer "a pencil". This prompted Adam Braun to found “Pencils of Promise” to build schools in developing countries. Braun and Bieber have actively supported the organization. The charity has helped build over 200 schools in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Billboard reported that Scooter Braun - together with customers and its companies - granted more wishes for Make-A-Wish by 2017 than any other organization in the foundation's history. Scooter Braun received the Humanitarian Award at the 2016 Billboard Touring Awards for his philanthropic support of “Pencils of Promise”, Make-A-Wish Foundation and “Fuck Cancer”.

In 2017, Billboard magazine Scooter referred to Braun as the "rescue service" of the music industry when he organized and produced the One Love Manchester benefit concert and Telethon Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief within a few months. In March 2018, George Clooney , Braun and his team organized the March for Our Lives , a student-led demonstration for stricter gun laws, held in Washington, DC . Vox reported that the march was the largest in the history of the Capitol since the Vietnam War.
