Lady A (2010)

Lady A , until 2020 Lady Antebellum , is an American country band from Nashville . She has been awarded a Grammy several times . Her most successful song is Need You Now .

Band history

Charles Kelley, brother of the pop musician Josh Kelley , had already released two pop albums before attempting a restart in Nashville in 2005. He teamed up with his friend Dave Haywood , later joined by the singer Hillary Scott , the daughter of country singer Linda Davis .

The original band name comes from the Latin description for the time before a war ( Antebellum ); in the USA it means the time before the Civil War . Charles Kelley used the term while looking at photos of historic houses; During a joint discussion, the band decided to put “Lady” in front.

The trio first attracted attention in 2007 when they accompanied pianist Jim Brickman on his hit Never Alone . In the same year they got a recording contract with Capitol Records and released the debut single Love Don't Live Here . They reached number three on the US country charts and were also successful on the Billboard Hot 100 . The debut album named after the band reached number one on the country album charts and reached number four on the US album charts . With the release I Run to You , the band also reached number one in the country single charts .

In 2008 the band received the Academy of Country Music's Newcomer Award for the Top New Vocal Group and was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Country Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards . Furthermore, they received as best group of the year the CMA Award 2009 of the CMA . The track I Run to You received the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Group at the Grammy Awards 2010 .

In August 2009, another single, Need You Now, was released, which went straight to number one among the country songs and was also in the top five of the pop charts for a week. After the release of the second album of the same name in February 2010, the song also rose again in the charts. It reached number two for three weeks in a row, making it one of the most successful country songs of the year. The album was number one on the US album charts for four weeks and was the number one album in the country sector for months. Within half a year it sold over three million times, the single over four million times. The single Our Kind of Love was the band's fourth number one hit in the US country charts after I Run to You , Need You Now and American Honey .

The great success of Need You Now meant that a Europe-wide publication followed in May 2010. The single and album were able to place themselves in the charts in many European countries. At the Grammy Awards 2011, the band was most successful with five prizes, with Need You Now receiving four awards in the main categories of Single of the Year and Song of the Year as well as Best Country Song and Best Country Performance. They received another award for Country Album of the Year. In September 2011 the group released their third album entitled Own the Night in the USA . Golden followed in May 2013 ; in September 2014 the album 747 .

In the context of the racism debate in the USA in the wake of the death of George Floyd , the band renamed themselves "Lady A" in order to avoid any associations with a glorification of the confederation and slavery .
