Victoria Loren "Tory" Kelly (born December 14, 1992 in Wildomar , California ) is an American singer-songwriter .
biography
Kelly's parents were musicians too. At the age of ten she participated in Star Search ; two years later she won a similar talent show called America's Most Talented Kids . She received a record deal, which was terminated by mutual agreement.
Then she started writing her own songs and posting them on YouTube . It had over a million subscribers and over 24 million hits for a cover version of Frank Ocean's song Thinkin '' Bout You . Her first EP, Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly , reached number nine on the Heatseeker charts.
She has been managed by Scooter Braun since 2013, and she signed a recording deal with Capitol Records that same year . She has supported Jewel , Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith . Their first label release was the EP Foreword . At the end of 2013 she entered the top 20 of the US album charts .
In June 2015 she released her debut album Unbreakable Smile , which reached number two in the US charts. The album was released worldwide in October 2015. It made it into the top 10 in Australia and New Zealand and also made it into the charts in several European countries.
Kelly was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Artist category and for a People's Choice Award in the Best Breakout Artist category in early 2016 . On the occasion of Prince's death in April 2016, a tribute evening was held in Saint Paul in October 2016 in honor of the musician at which she performed. In December 2016 she played the role of the elephant Meena in Sing .
In May 2018, she married her long-time partner in California, the American-German basketball player André Murillo . At the Grammy Awards 2019 she won two awards in the Gospel / Christian Pop Music category for the song Never Alone with Kirk Franklin and the album Hiding Place .
