history

In October 1880, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a railway line from San Diego to Barstow that passed Lake Elsinore . The material for the rail construction was delivered from Antwerp , the locomotives from the American east coast. On August 14, 1882, the connection to Colton was completed. The new route became known as the California Southern Railroad . She ensured that what was then Rancho La Laguna , on whose territory Wildomar is located today, could develop.

A little later, Franklin Heald, who had already toured the area before, decided to buy almost the entire rancho and was to pay the London and San Francisco Bank $ 24,000 for it. After a deposit of $ 1,000 on July 3, 1883, he was able to win William Collier and Donald Graham as partners. On September 24, the three finally acquired the 51.93 km² area thanks to a back payment of 7,000 US dollars by William Collier. The remaining amount was paid a little later.

On January 1, 1884, a railway depot was built in what is now Wildomar . It was in operation for a few years.

Heavy rains in 1884 damaged both the route sections at Temecula and the San Jacinto River and Railroad Canyon on the shores of Lake Elsinores. Due to the financial losses, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad had to take over the route and had it renewed in 1885. In February 1885, Collier and Graham bought Franklin Heald's rights to an 11 km² piece of land. This in turn acquired ownership rights to an as yet unsold area north of it.

In December 1885, Collier and Graham made a map of their settlement, which they named Wildomar . The place name is composed of the names of its founders: "WIL" by William Collier, "DO" by Donald Graham and "MAR" by Margaret Collier Graham, the wife of Donald Graham and sister of William Collier.

In 1886 a new school as well as a post office and railway depot were built. After 1887 a large hotel, a rental stable, a forge, several shops, a wood storage area and a park were built. In 1888 the residents of the village received a Methodist church. In October 1887 a 6.1 km² area with Santa Rosa was incorporated into Wildomar by buying it off.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Wildomar got his own newspaper, The Transcript . During this time the railway line was flooded more and more often and finally the section from Temecula to San Diego had to be abandoned. Since Wildomar could now only be reached by rail from the north and as a result train traffic decreased, the development slowed down. In 1935 rail traffic came to a complete standstill and the tracks were removed; Wildomar became an almost forgotten place. When Interstate 15 was built by Wildomar in 1985 , interest in the community began to grow. For the second time, Wildomar began to grow and discover new wealth. Between 2000 and 2010 alone, the population more than doubled from 14,064 to 32,176.

On February 5, 2008, the majority of eligible voters voted to designate the then Census-designated place Wildomar as a city . On July 1st of the same year the decision came into force; since then Wildomar is the 25th city in Riverside County .
