history

Willowbrook originally belonged to Rancho Tajauta , which was transferred to Anastacio Abila in 1843. In the area willows grew (English Willow ). Presumably the name of the area derives from these trees. The name Willowbrook was first documented in 1903. The first plots for development were designated in 1895 and 1896.

The plots were traditionally very deep, so there was plenty of space for gardens behind the houses. Willowbrook long retained a semi-rural character, with residents raising fruits and vegetables in their gardens and even raising chickens or pigs. This changed around 1980 when urbanization made the area more in line with the surrounding areas.

In the 1940s and the aftermath of World War II , African American immigrants began to settle in Willowbrook. One reason was that the slightly rural character of the area reminded them of their old home in the southern states . A special feature from this period are around 250 residential buildings designed by star architect Paul R. Williams for black World War II veterans in the area known as Carver Manor .

The 1965 Watts riot, with 35 dead and over 1,000 injured, highlighted the lack of a large hospital in the Compton and Watts area. In 1972 the Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center opened in Willowbrook. The hospital was planned by Paul R. Williams . Because of the fighting between the gangs , v. a. of the Bloods and Crips in the hospital's catchment area, it led the US in the treatment of gunshot wounds in the 1990s , earning the nickname "Killer King" because of the high death rate. The hospital with 233 beds had to close after medical scandals in 2007 and was replaced in 2015 by the privately owned Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital .

economy

Willowbrook is the location of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital . It is a 131-bed hospital opened in 2015 . The hospital covers medical care in the surrounding areas with high crime rates, high levels of alcoholism, and an unhealthy diet. At the same time, there is no other hospital and a chronic medical deficit in the neighboring communities and districts. It is the core of a medical service center. The hospital itself cost nearly $ 300 million, the entire service center, including transportation, will cost $ 1 billion and provide labor for 2,700 people. The health center replaced the Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center at the same location, which had to close in 2007 as a result of medical scandals.
