Cabazon is a census-designated place in Riverside County in the US state of California with a population of 2,535 (as of the 2010 census ). The place is at the narrowest point of the San Gorgonio pass .

Cabazon is located in the north of Riverside County in California in the USA . The village is completely surrounded by a community-free area. Your northern limit is marked by Interstate 10 .

The place has 2535 inhabitants (2010) and extends over an area of ​​12.674 km², of which 12.608 km² are land area; the population density is thus 201.1 inhabitants per square kilometer and is comparatively low. The center of Cabazon is at an altitude of 559 m.

history

The Cabazon settlement was built on a Southern Pacific Railroad station in the 1870s . Originally the place was called Jacinto , it was later renamed Cabezone after a nearby Indian ranch . In 1884 an orchard and a new town were established by the owners of the Cabazon Land and Water Company. Many properties were first sold and later bought back. In 1910 a school and a post office were opened for the few residents.

In 1955 Cabazon was granted town charter. In 1972, after a few years of scandals, political instability and a lack of growth, Cabazon's population voted to return the town charter. Even if there has been interest in renewed urban development since the turn of the millennium, Cabazon still exists today only as a census-designated place .

The Cabazon Dinosaurs are two dinosaur sculptures that stand off Interstate 10 . They became known through the film Pee-Wee's Crazy Adventure . The two dinosaur sculptures are 150 and 100 ton heavy replicas of the Apatosaurus (built from 1964 to 1975) and the Tyrannosaurus (built in 1981). Originally the two figures called "Dinny" and "Mr. Rex" were supposed to serve to draw customers' attention to "Claude Bell's Wheel Inn Cafe".

In 2005, the Bell family dinosaur figurines were sold to Answers in Genesis for $ 1.2 million .

Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa

Morongo Casino

The Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa towers over the San Gorgonio Pass with its 27-story skyscraper and is operated by the Morongo Band of Mission Indians , a group of Cahuilla Indians from Cabazon. It is one of the largest Native American casinos in the United States.

In 2003 a water filling plant was built on the eastern edge of Cabazon by the drinking water company Arrowhead Water in cooperation with the Indians.

Esperanza fire

In late October 2006, arson near Cabazon caused a fire that became known as the Esperanza fire and devastated an area of ​​160 km² within five days; five firefighters fell victim to the flames. In memory of them, California State Route 243 is also called the Esperanza Firefighters Memorial Highway .

Cabazon is part of the 23rd district in the California Senate , currently represented by Republican Bill Emmerson , and the 42nd district in the California State Assembly , represented by Republican Brian Nestande . Cabazon is also a member of California's 36th  Congressional constituency , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R + 1 and is represented by Democrat Raul Ruiz .
