history

The place was created in the course of construction work on a railway line that was created from Blythe . It was named after former President of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Edward Payson Ripley. The original plans to extend the track a hundred kilometers southwest to the main line of Southern Pacific Transportation were later discarded. The settlement was then to be converted into a recreational area, but the valley was flooded a few years later and the settlements largely destroyed. Today an old water tower is a historical relic in Ripley.

Located in the middle of the Palo Verde Valley, Ripley was the most successful place in the valley until the early 1930s. The construction of US Highways 60 and 70 through the neighboring town of Blythe brought about the decline of Ripley. From the 1960s onwards there was only one shop in Ripley that served as a department store and grocery store for farmers in the southern Palo Verde Valley. This shop was robbed and set on fire in the 1980s and has not been rebuilt since.
