The place owes its name to a former Luiseño Indian village called awáanga , which means “dog place” in German. In 1858, the Butterfield Overland Mail founded Tejungo Station about three kilometers west of what is now the local post office . The wooden building was built in a forest a bit away from the route. Later the settlement was renamed Aguanga Station after the nearby Indian village .

Joseph R. West wrote in a report in 1861 that the now closed station was now called Joseph Giftaler Giftaler's Ranch after its German owner . A map from the days of the Civil War refers to the settlement as Dutchman's . In 1863, the Camp Giftaler Ranch base was established here on the route taken by Union Army troops on their way to the Arizona Territory .

In 1864 the German immigrant Jacob Bergman acquired Giftaler's Ranch. The old stop is now on California State Route 79 in Aguanga. The remains of the building can still be found today.
