North Shore is a census-designated place in Riverside County in the US state of California . The place has 3477 inhabitants (as of 2010) and is located in the Coachella Valley . North Shore owes its name to its location on the northeastern shore of the Salton Sea . It was a popular vacation spot for a long time, before the rising salt content and pollution of the lake caused tourism to come to a standstill.

The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge is located on the North Shore. Established as a 140 km² protected area at the behest of the President in 1930, the manageable area today is only about 8.9 km². The reason for the decline is the flooding from the Salton Sea. A proposed dike system to control the increasing salinization should also prevent further penetration of the water.

history

The beginnings can be traced back to 1958. At that time, the entrepreneurs Ray Ryan and Trav Rogers bought the land on which North Shore was later built and sold individual properties from 1960 onwards.

From 1962 to 1984, the North Shore Beach and Yacht Club was located in a building designed by Albert Frey . In 1981 a flood destroyed the pier, which is why boats could no longer moor there. After a $ 3.35 million restoration, the yacht club has been accessible again to the population as a community center and memorial since 2011.
