Raul Ruiz (born August 25, 1972 in Coachella , California ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Raul Ruiz attended Coachella Valley High School until 1990 and then studied at the University of California in Los Angeles until 1994 . After a subsequent medical degree at Harvard University and his license as a doctor, he began to work in this profession. He worked for some time in Mexico , El Salvador and Serbia . He then worked as an ambulance at Eisenhower Medical Center at Rancho Mirage in his home Coachella Valley . When the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 , he provided humanitarian aid. For this he received the Commander's Award for Public Service from the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army . In 2011 he became the assistant dean of the medical school at the University of California at Riverside . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the 2012 congressional election , Ruiz was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 36th constituency of California , where he succeeded Janice Hahn , who moved to the 44th district, on January 3, 2013 . In the election, Ruiz won 52.9 percent of the vote. His Republican rival Mary Bono Mack came up 47.1 percent and had to leave Congress . After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.
