Katie Hill (2019)

Katherine "Katie" Lauren Hill (born August 25, 1987 in Abilene , Texas ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . She had held the 25th seat of the state of California in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 , but resigned from her mandate in early November 2019 following media reports of sexual relations with a member of Congress . Hill is the first federal politician in the United States to resign over a sex scandal.

In a widely acclaimed farewell speech, she criticized the politics of US President Donald Trump as being male-dominated.

Life

Katie Hill grew up in Saugus , part of Santa Clarita , California. Her father Mike is a police officer and her mother Rachel is a nurse. She attended public schools in the Santa Clarita Valley and studied at California State University, Northridge , where she received a bachelor's degree in English and a master's in public administration .

From July 2010 to July 2019, Hill was married to artist Kenny Heslep. They lived in Agua Dulce in the state of California on their farm, where they were rescue animals. Hill was California's first openly bisexual member of the United States House of Representatives.

Political career

Katie Hill's political career began with People Assisting the Homeless ( PATH ), a nonprofit that develops affordable and supportive services for the homeless in California. There she began as a political lawyer and later as an executive director.

On March 8, 2017, Hill announced that it would participate in the 2018 House of Representatives election . She ran for the 25th seat of the state of California in the House of Representatives of the United States and achieved second place behind the Republican incumbent Steve Knight with 20.7% in the open area code . In the main election on November 6, 2018, she surprisingly beat Knight with 54.4 percent of the vote.

She was a member of the following committees:

She was also a member of the following associations of representatives:

In October 2019, Hill was accused by the conservative blog RedState of having an affair with one of her employees during her election campaign and of living in a love triangle with her and her husband. The British tabloid Daily Mail also reported. Hill accused her ex-husband of running a smear campaign against her, but admitted the allegations were true. The blog also published nude photos of her, which also show her taking drugs. The Capitol Police are investigating how the images got on RedState. In response to the publication, Hill vowed to support those affected by revenge porn .

On October 23, 2019, the House of Representatives Ethics Committee opened an investigation into whether Hill was in a relationship with a male Congressional officer in violation of House rules. In late October, Hill announced her resignation from Congressional mandate for early November. She wrote on Twitter that it was the toughest decision of her life, but she believed it was the right one for the residents of her constituency and the country. The Speaker of the House , Nancy Pelosi , advocated this step.

In her farewell address to Congress, she lamented a "misogynist culture" and a "double standard" that would have led her to resign while powerful men suffer no consequences for their unethical behavior. She also sharply attacked President Donald Trump , whose behavior she declared as misogynistic.

In the 2020 extraordinary election, Mike Garcia won back Hill's former seat for the Republican Party with 54.9%. A large number of candidates stood up for the regular election that same year , including Cenk Uygur for the Democrats and George Papadopoulos for the Republicans. Even Steve Knight came again. Katie Hill supports Christy Smith , a California State Assembly MP .
