John Joseph Allen

John Joseph Allen Jr. (born November 27, 1899 in Oakland , California , †  March 7, 1995 in McCall , Idaho ) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1959 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Allen attended public schools in his home country. During the First World War he served in the US Navy . After the war he studied law at the University of California at Berkeley until 1922, among other things. After his admission to the bar in 1922, he began to work in this profession in Oakland. From 1923 to 1943 he was a member of the Oakland Education Committee, of which he was president several times. From 1936 through 1938, Allen served as president of the California State School Trustees Association . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1936 to 1944 he was a member of the district executive committee of his party. During the Second World War between 1942 and 1945 he was again in the US Navy as Lieutenant Commander . He was used in the South Pacific , among other places . After the war, in 1946 and 1947, he was Vice-President of the State Supervisory Commission for School Districts.

In the 1946 congressional election , Allen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of California , where he succeeded John H. Tolan on January 3, 1947 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1959 . The Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the beginning of the civil rights movement fell during this period . In 1958, Allen was not re-elected. Between 1959 and 1961 he was Secretary of State in the US Department of Commerce . He then practiced as a lawyer until 1969. He then retired, which he spent in McCall, Idaho. Between 1988 and 1992 he was mayor there. He was considered the oldest incumbent mayor of the United States at the time. John Allen died on March 7, 1995 at the age of 95.
