Harold Terry Johnson (born December 2, 1907 in Broderick , Yolo County , California , †  March 16, 1988 in Roseville , California) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1981 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harold Johnson attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Nevada at Reno . He later ran Pacific Fruit Express Co. He was also the district chairman of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks union . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He held a number of local offices in his homeland. Between 1941 and 1949 he was Mayor of Roseville. From 1945 to 1949, he also headed the American River Development League , an organization that dealt with river development. Between 1949 and 1959 he was a member of the California Senate . In 1956, 1960 and 1964 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the 1958 congressional election , Johnson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of California , where he succeeded Clair Engle on January 3, 1959 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . Since 1975 he has represented the first district of his state there as the successor to Donald H. Clausen . His time in Congress included the Vietnam War and the Watergate Affair, as well as the final phase of the civil rights movement . From 1977 to 1981, Johnson was chairman of the transportation committee. In 1980 he was not re-elected.

After leaving Congress, Harold Johnson withdrew from politics. He died in Roseville on March 16, 1988.
