Harley Edwin Rouda Jr. (born December 10, 1961 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He is a member of the United States House of Representatives for the 48th constituency in California .

Life

Rouda is originally from Columbus, Ohio, where he grew up with three older siblings. After doing his Bachelor of Science at the University of Kentucky , he moved to Ohio State University , where he graduated with a Master of Business Administration . He later took an interest in law and obtained a Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School in Columbus . After that, Rouda worked as a lawyer and specialized in business law. In addition, he was committed to social projects against homelessness as part of his employer. In 1990 he moved to California with his family .

Initially registered as a Republican , Rouda switched to the Democrats in 1997, as he could no longer identify with the party's increasing shift to the right. On March 2, 2017, he submitted his application for a seat in the US House of Representatives for the 48th Congressional electoral  district of California. This constituency covers the coastline of Orange County in the south of the state. In the primary election in June 2018, he prevailed against several inner-party competitors and was thus able to compete in the main election against the long-standing Republican mandate holder, Dana Rohrabacher . Rouda won the election on November 6, 2018 with 53.4% ​​of the vote. 46.6% voted for Rohrabacher. Rouda's victory came in the midterm election , in which Republicans lost their majority in the House of Representatives. In Orange County, which has long been dominated by the Republic, in particular, the Democrats were able to score points by attracting new voters in the suburbs, especially women. Democratic applicants were also successful in the neighboring constituencies, so that Orange County will for the first time only be represented by members of the Democratic Republic. In his election campaign, Rouda mainly criticized the tax policy of President Trump's administration and accused Rohrabacher of excessive partisanship in Congress , which paralyzed political operations. He also called for comprehensive measures to combat climate change and the promotion of renewable energies . He received financial support in the election campaign from the billionaire and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg . Rouda officially took office with the constitution of the new congress on January 3, 2019.

Harley Rouda has been married to his wife Kaira since 1990. The couple have four children.
