Julius Kahn

Julius Kahn (born February 28, 1861 in Kuppenheim , Grand Duchy of Baden , †  December 18, 1924 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician of German origin. Between 1899 and 1903 and again from 1905 to 1924 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

While still a child, Julius Kahn came with his parents from his home in Baden to San Francisco in 1866, where he attended public schools. Then he joined a theater group for ten years. In 1890 he returned to San Francisco. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1894, he began to work in this profession in San Francisco. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1892 he was elected to the California State Assembly .

In the congressional elections of 1898 Kahn was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of California , where he succeeded James G. Maguire on March 4, 1899 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1903 . In 1902 he was defeated by the Democrat Edward J. Livernash . Kahn appealed against the outcome of this election without success.

In the elections of 1904 , Kahn managed to win back his previous mandate, whereupon he replaced Livernash again on March 4, 1905. After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on December 18, 1924. At this point in time, he had already been confirmed for the next legislative period. As a member of parliament, Kahn stood up for the military strength of the United States. From 1919 he was chairman of the military committee. During his time in the US House of Representatives, the First World War and the ratification of the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution took place . After his death, his wife Florence was elected to succeed him in Congress.
