Graciela Flores "Grace" Napolitano (born December 4, 1936 in Brownsville , Texas ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 1999 .

Career

Grace Napolitano attended Brownsville High School and then Cerritos College in Norwalk, California. She then began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1986 she was elected to the Norwalk Parish Council; between 1989 and 1990 she was mayor of this place. From 1992 to 1998 she was a member of the California State Assembly .

In the 1998 congressional election , Napolitano was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 34th  constituency of California , where she succeeded Esteban Edward Torres on January 3, 1999 . After ten re-elections between 2000 and 2018, she can continue to hold office today. Her new legislative period runs until January 3, 2021. Between 2003 and 2013, she represented the 38th district of her state there. She has been a MP for the 32nd constituency of California since 2013. During her time as Congresswoman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Grace Napolitano sits or sat on the Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure and five subcommittees. She was also a member of the International Conservation Caucus . She is against US military interventions in foreign countries.

Grace Napolitano is married and has five children. She is not related to Janet Napolitano , who was governor of Arizona from 2003 to 2009 and then headed the Department of Homeland Security until 2013 .
