Brian Patrick Bilbray (born January 28, 1951 in Coronado , California ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 2013 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

Brian Bilbray is a cousin of former Congressman James Bilbray of Nevada . He graduated from Mar Vista High School and Southwestern College in his Californian homeland and then worked as a tax advisor. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1976 to 1978 he was a councilor in Imperial Beach ; from 1978 to 1985 he was mayor there. From 1985 to 1994 he was a member of the San Diego County county council .

In the 1994 congressional election , Bilbray was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 49th  constituency of California , where he succeeded Lynn Schenk on January 3, 1995 , whom he had defeated in the election. After two re-elections, he was initially able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2001 . In 2000 he was defeated by Susan Davis of the Democratic Party .

After the temporary end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Bilbray worked as a lobbyist. After the resignation of MP Randy Cunningham , he was elected in the by-election for the 50th seat of California as its successor in Congress, where he took office on June 6, 2006. After three re-elections, he could remain in the US House of Representatives until January 3, 2013. He was considered conservative and, since taking office for the second time in 2006, voted 93% of the votes for proposals from the then federal government under President George W. Bush . Bilbray was most recently a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and three sub-committees. He previously served on the Armed Forces Committee, Veterans Committee, and Committee on Government Reform . In 2013 he was defeated by Scott Peters .

Brian Bilbray is married with five children; privately he lives in San Diego . His son Brian is a councilor in Imperial Beach.
