James Bilbray

James Hubert Bilbray (born May 19, 1938 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) is an American politician . Between 1987 and 1995 he represented the first constituency of the state of Nevada in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

James Bilbray attended Las Vegas High School and then studied at the University of Nevada until 1960 . From 1955 to 1956, Bilbray was a member of the Nevada National Guard, whose reserve he was a member until 1963. After studying law at the American University in Washington and his admission to the bar, he began his new profession. Between 1965 and 1967 he was the assistant district attorney in Clark County . After that he was legal advisor to the juvenile court in this district until 1968. He was a municipal judge in Las Vegas in 1979 and 1980.

Political career

Bilbray became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1981 and 1987 he was a member of the Nevada Senate , where he sat on the tax and legal committees. In 1986 he was elected to the US House of Representatives; there he replaced Harry Reid, who had moved to the Senate , on January 3, 1987 . After several re-elections, James Bilbray was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 1995. He was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Armed Services and Intelligence Committee . In the 1994 congressional elections, Bilbray was defeated by John Ensign of the Republican Party by less than 1,400 votes .

After serving in Congress, Bilbray worked as a lawyer in a large law firm. In 2006 he was appointed to the board of directors of the United States Postal Service . His term of office there runs until 2015. James Bilbray is the cousin of Brian Bilbray , who has represented the State of California in the US House of Representatives as a Republican since 2006 .
